THE CENTURY is closing as it began, with war in Europe. From the Somme to Serbia runs a bloody line of barbarity. War is the extreme expression of a system which brings devastating economic crisis, famine and poverty. But another thread also runs through the century-of resistance, rebellion and revolution. Every war brings propaganda justifying the killing. Every crisis attempts to find scapegoats. We need ideas which can cut through the lies and confusion.
