VOTE SOCIALIST IN EURO POLL
THE EURO elections next Thursday are expected to see
a low turnout. As with the recent Scottish, Welsh and English local
elections, it is one more sign of the lack of enthusiasm for the
government. Socialists are standing in most areas to give voice to the
disenchantment with Tony Blair's New Labour and the feeling against the
war in the Balkans. We are for a socialist vote and would like to see a
united electoral front of all socialist parties. Among those socialists
who Socialist Worker urges support for are:
- The Socialist Alliance candidates in the
West Midlands region, where Socialist Worker supporters Lynne Hubbard
and Salman Mirza are part of the list of candidates headed by Dave
Nellist, the former Labour MP and now a Socialist Party councillor.
Lynne told Socialist Worker, "The campaign has given us the
opportunity to raise the socialist alternative over a whole number of
issues. We have received a very good response when we speak out against
the war in the Balkans, against privatisation and in favour of taxing
the rich."
- The Socialist Labour Party list in
London, which is headed by miners' union leader Arthur Scargill. Many
people will vote for Scargill because he is a symbol of class struggle
and socialism, despite a campaign which has featured a great deal of
propaganda about Europe which could come from the mouths of right
wingers.
- The candidates of the Scottish Socialist
Party who are seeking to follow up the election of Tommy Sheridan on
6 May.
- The Alternative Labour List in the East
Midlands headed by Euro MP Ken Coates. He was expelled from the Labour
Party for refusing to go along with Blair's stampede rightwards.
